Attraction Details :
Wat Phra Chao Lan Thong is situated within the city walls of Chiang Saen, Wiang sub-district, Chiang Saen district, Chiang Rai Province. The temple is named after the principal Buddha image at the main image hall—Phra Chao Lan Thong. In the past, Phra Chao Thong Ngua or Phraya Kree Rub Phu Ngoen Gong, a son of Phra Chao Tilokkarat, ordered the Buddha image cast in bronze. Its weight was a Lan Thong, equal to approximately 2,000 kilograms, resulting in its name. Its size was 2 meters of width with its lap and more than 3 meters tall. In addition, Phra Chao Thong Ngua had the temple constructed in 1489; therefore, it became a very ancient over-500-year temple. Despite its consistent restoration, the antiquity still remained; for example, an ancient inclining brick stupa. The architecture of the temple was a gorgeous Northern style. There was also a Buddha image that the villagers worshipped, called Phra Chao Thong Thip. This Buddha image was respectfully invited from Wat Phra Chao Thong Thip in Mae Suai district, while the real one was still housed at Wat Phra Chao Thong Thip and was well-known for fulfilling the prayers’ wishes to have children.
For those who visit ancient remains and antiques in Chiang Saen, Wat Phra Chao Lan Thong is also one of the ancient places that they should not miss. The temple opens daily at normal time. It is a very quiet and peaceful religious place. Besides, there are many more interesting tourist spots, such as Chiang Saen National Museum, Wat Phra That Pha Ngao, Wat Phra That Doi Kitti, Wat Mung Muang, Wat Chedi Chet Yot, Chiang Saen Lake, and the Golden Triangle that overlaps the three countries.
